From the Author of 'Red Runs the Plain'

After a storm tossed night in the Rockies, Nate Grisham encounters a lost Army captain and his family far from any civilized town. And something doesn't seem right about his story of having been ambushed by Blackfoot warriors. After escorting them to the nearest Army post he discovers the Army is looking for an imposter—and murderer.

W.R. Benton and newcomer Grady Clark team up to bring another rip-roaring mountain man western to life in this new book. This story is inspired by real historical examples of blacks, both freed men and runaways, that moved west before and after the Civil war.

About the Author
W.R Benton is a retired U.S. military senior Noncommissioned Officer with over twenty-six years of active duty service. He grew up in the Missouri Ozark Mountains, where hunting, trapping, camping, and other outdoor activities were the norm. Additionally, he spent more than twelve years teaching survival and parachuting procedures to U.S. Air Force personnel as a Life Support instructor. Mister Benton has an Associate's Degree in Search and Rescue, Survival Operations, a Bachelors Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, and a Masters Degree in Psychology near completion.

Nate Grisham Black Mountain Man edition by WR Benton Grady Clark Literature Fiction eBooks

I first became aware of Mr. Benton's writings when I read The Youngest Mountain Man which I really enjoyed. In that book, I "met" Nate and CottonTop and now feel as though I know them personally. Mr. Benton is a much better writer than most whose books are available on Kindle. I feel like I'm on the trail with the characters and I enjoy the way he switches between character situations in each chapter, providing a parallel view of the storyline.
This is the fourth book I've read by Mr. Benton and have enjoyed them all. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that Mr. Benton needs to get a good proof reader or editor as I find myself making mental corrections on the many typos, point-of-view errors and other mistakes that jump out at me. That being said, it doesn't affect my enjoyment of his storytelling skills.

Nate Grisham Black Mountain Man edition by WR Benton Grady Clark Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Cover to cover the story is very consistent. Red, White, Black ... There are rules that simply must be honored. Some actions are understandable and maybe necessary; others are detested by everyone. Cross those lines and you will not be forgiven - hunted and 'dealt' with.
Enjoyed every minute of it. The characters really came to life. You could almost smell the mountain air and cooking as well as feel the harshness of the weather at times.

Although it was based on a character who was previously a slave, the story didn't drown in self pity or spend time mulling the issue, instead it focused on the character of the man and his freinsdships, integrity and love of the mountain life he chose.
Don't normally like books that bring race into the story. Usually, some author is trying to make some social point. Not so much here. Race becomes part of the mountainman story just as simply as other background influences. The yarn takes you to the time and activities rather than trying to convince you to take some social position based on the storyline. Well done Bentom.
I’ve been reading westerns all my life and this one ranks as one of the best for me. Lots of action and great characters. Will be reading more from this author.
I have concluded that W.R. Benton, is incapable of writing of anything less than superb. This book as all others on Benton's work is chocked full of excitement suspense and hair raising encounters with Indians and White men alike. Relax and live a few brief moments of a mountain man's life. You will not be disappointed. So Giddy Up.
I had not given much thought to reading a book about the wild -wild west. Also, I never gave a lot of thought to a black man being a mountain man. I really appreciate any art form that present black men in a positive light so I was really tempted to read about Nate Grisham hoping that he was rough and tough enough to survive life in the wilderness and yet kind and caring to his fellow man.

I found that I actually enjoyed reading about life in the 1800’s in the United States,
particularly around Missouri. It was fun to read about the mountains, the rivers and the trees. I enjoyed reading about them traveling in the mountains on horse back in the rain and the snow. It was interesting to read about them trapping their food and cooking out in the wildness on an open fire. How little they were able to sleep and how they had to keep moving even during the darkness of night. I loved the description of the bright moon and of the sun rising and setting. I enjoyed the adventure of the mountain men and I appreciated their awareness and appreciation of the Crow and the Sioux as they tried to stay alive. My heart sank with each violent and brutal massacre; I recovered by realizing that is how the west was won.

I enjoyed reading about the established German town. I really enjoyed the description of the inhabitants of the town, they all appeared to be dedicated to making their town a great place for all of them to live. I also enjoyed reading about the trading post, how it was a central place for everybody, the military, the mountain men and the Indians.

There were good guys and then there were bad guys. They all seemed to appreciated going to battle against a great warrior. They each had their own battle tactics and advantages and during each battle it seemed that either side could be the winner. I am glad that there was only one person whose entire existence was dedicate to killing and stealing. At times I did think that his criminal spree was a bit overwhelming.

I am glad that I read about Nate, Cotton Top, Doc, Deacon and the others. I am happy to have had this great adventure out in the wilderness. It was a great experience to be apart of the gun battles and the knife fights and live to write about it.
This book is so full of action and unexpected plots that it was difficult for me to stop reading. Nate G. and his companions battled not only different Indian tribes, but the harse elements, bullet and knife wounds along with lack of sleep and food. Nate had to also battle personal prejudices, which the author portrayed admirably. His constant efforts to loose a bad man, and ultimately go after the same man is an adventure to read. One will just have to purchase the book to follow. The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 rating, is there were just several grammatical errors. Some words were repeated (the the, or the same the), additionally a negative word was used when a positive word was meant, "he" was used often when it should have been his or this, it seems in this age of computers, editing has become obsolete. Omitting the errors it is a great book.
