The former head of Amsterdam’s Murder brigade is found dead.

He was 81 years old, why not let nature take its course? The openly gay, uncompromising and highly neurotic DCI Jac Roggeveen and her squad are handed the investigation. As the layers of the deceased life are pealed back, a web of corruption and drug dealing begins to emerge and long buried secrets rise to the surface.

The investigation leads to Amsterdam’s infamous Red Light District, Spain, Belgium and The Hague as the investigation widens until the squad stumble on a past so dark that those involved will stop at nothing to halt the investigation as more murders come to light.

The underbelly of Amsterdam is brought vividly to life by an author who worked in the Legal Profession in The Netherlands for many years and who has been involved in some of the country’s major cases of the last twenty years. Many of the characters are based on real people and real events. The book is the first of a trilogy.

A Poisonous City DCI Jac of Amsterdam Book 1 edition by Markey Literature Fiction eBooks

When the 81-year-old former head of Amsterdam’s Murder Brigade is found dead, the uncompromising and unconventional DCI Jac Roggeveen and her team are assigned to investigate. When they begin peeling back the murky layers of the victim’s life, they find maggots crawling from the heart of the city, and people in high places who are determined that the truth remain hidden.
A Poisonous City by Markey reveals the dark underbelly of Amsterdam as Jac and her people pursue justice despite overwhelmingly high odds and high-level resistance. This book contains lots of in depth historical information about Amsterdam, and has a fascinating main character, but it is a bit choppy, with more telling than showing. More action and less narration would make it a much better read, as would more back story about Jac, a uniquely intriguing character.

A Poisonous City DCI Jac of Amsterdam Book 1 edition by Markey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

OKAY...the story was great, and had lot of twists and turns... a few problems with the delivery... English is so obviously not this authors first language so I am not taking off stars for the stilted and "off" way of structuring the sentences, like nouna and pronouns switched... like I glass of water can have... it is different to translate to another language and even though it was a high distraction, I am not giving a star reduction because it is translation error, not incompetence. Also the interactions between characters is AMAZING, and socially acceptable, for that part of the world. Here in the USA your going to find a lot of fault with these but I am not unfair and will cm ot give less stars for something normal for the author yet not for me. I have done enough international travel to know thst "American "way of things is not the only "right" way of doing things. Anyway the book is good. NOT grewt, Because Of These errora. It could be better if they choose a better editor with a stronger, firmer grasp of English, because the one who copy edited this book may have known English but needs to practice it more. I hate to give it 5 stars because of all the errrr but I know others will tear this author alive so I refuse to be a part of that. I choose to see the good in a book, and I hope others will be so kind. I have never been to Amsterdam nor do I speak Dutch, and there were a lot of thingsin here thst were referenced I didn't know any ting about, posters of leaders I did not know of, places, etc, and it was also distracting, maybe the author can choose more universal names for these references if there is a re-edit? It was a great story, delivery needs a LOT of help. If you read this and give it a chance you WILL see the intricate and complex set of cm characters and relationships emerge, but in th is one, because of a LANGUAGE BARRIER ONLY, you will have to struggle a bit... give it a chance and be gentle and fair in your reviews... Congratulations for getting your book this far... i do t know if it is a man or woman author, it is only "Markey." Anyway please know I am going super super soft on you for one reason and ONLY one reason... Ignorance or carelessness of the English language uses and structures, socially accepted cues, interactions or even cultural referencess, etc...being ignored and an author plowing through and publishing anyway is just dis re spectrum to his reader.... LACK of said knowledge referenced above is not a reason to punish or scold... i feel truly this book would be a solid 5 on its own in Amsterdam right now yet in US market it will struggle until fixed...

What did I like? I absolutely loved the lead character, Jac Roggeveen, she is so awesome and funny. I was laughing throughout this book. All the characters were amazing, and it was all of them that really brought the book to the heights of exhilarating. Watching how Jac worked through her cases and the dedication that she showed in her work. I sure wish that there were millions in the world just like her.

What will you like? The storyline is intriguing, provocative, engrossing, poignant, touching, enchanting and fascinating. I don’t believe that you will be able to stop reading. I didn’t!!! Warning this does have some explicit details but did not detract from the book. Besides the above, the storyline is well developed and grows as the pages turn. The characters are enchanting, and you will fall in love with them, but the best part is the ending! It is mind-bending and will blow you away. I can not wait till book two comes out, this will be an addicting series.
